WHAMAGEDDON CLAXON…JUST DON’T PRESS PLAY!

Well of course it was going to be this one and if you’re still playing then I salute you. It’s headline news! And now, if you’ll excuse me, the eleven year old me is just beside herself. Wham! are Christmas number one!

Written and produced by George Michael this has to be one of the biggest Christmas songs of all time. It’s been covered by too many artists to mention over the years and rereleased by Wham! on five different occasions, making it into the charts practically every year since 1984.

It was originally released as a double A-Side with Everything She Wants and, after having two number ones already that year, the news that Wham! were releasing a Christmas single started a media battle for the coveted number one slot between themselves and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, who had already reached number one with The Power of Love in early December.

As it turned out though neither of them made the Christmas number one spot after Band Aid released Do They Know it’s Christmas. Instead, Wham! had to settle for number two but the single did spend twenty five weeks on the UK chart.

And now, a mere thirty-nine years after its release and seven years after the death of George Michael, they finally did it. Did I mention? Wham! are Christmas number one!
