16 September, 1996.

Looks like the inner jukebox is in a bit of a soppy mood this morning. That’s fine, I’ll take it, I’ve always liked this song anyway.

Written by Alanis Morissette, along with US songwriter and producer Glen Ballard, this was the fifth song to be released as a single from Morissette’s 1996 album Jagged Little Pill. The album was actually her third studio album but it became her international debut, her first two albums only being released in her native Canada.

Almost thirty (really?!) years later, it still surprises me that such a beautiful little song came from such an angry album. In fact, Morissette admitted herself that the song was a result of finding herself in a healthy relationship – a completely different place to where she had been when writing the super angry You Oughta Know.

On its release the song hit the top ten in five countries, including number one in Canada, and Iceland. It also topped the US Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 charts. Here in the UK it was her first top ten hit (a fact that surprised me), spending seven weeks on the chart and peaking at number seven.
