1910 & June 1965.

Okay two things surprised me this morning. Firstly, that this song is in my head, where did I dredge this up from? Secondly, that it was a huge hit for Herman’s Hermits! I was wondering how on earth I would find a video link  for this when I entered it into YouTube.

It was written in 1910 and became the signature song of music hall star Harry Champion, who was also known for the song Any Old Iron. The original required the word Henry to be sung with three syllables and without the ‘H’ so pronounced ‘Enerey’.

In 1965 Herman’s Hermits revised the song, pronouncing Henry properly, and it became the fastest selling record in history to that date.

All together now…second verse, same as the first…. “I’m ‘Enery the Eighth, I am. ‘Enery the Eighth I am, I am!”
