30 November, 1979.

Ah, my favourite band of all time with possibly my favourite lyrics of all time, from an album that has featured heavily in my life since it’s release in 1979….

“If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don’t be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice.”

Not exactly cheerful but then The Wall was far from a puppy filled romp in the sunshine with jelly and ice cream for tea! The story of an alienated and embittered rock star feeling isolated from everything around him…and some would suggest a semi-autobiographical tale born of Roger Waters’ need to exorcise his own demons. Whatever it’s origins, no matter how dark the content or the album’s long term effect on the band, it’s hard to argue against the merit of The Wall in the history of rock.
