1921 (1918).

An emotional one this morning but happy memories of me doing Al Jolson impressions, singing this to my Mum one night after a few glasses of fizz.

Although associated with Al Jolson, this was originally performed in 1918 by William Frawley who achieved success with the song as a Vaudeville act. It was brought Jolson’s attention in 1921 and he recorded his version and performed it in the films The Jazz Singer (1927), The Singing Fool (1928) and The Rose of Washington Square (1939).
