A nice gentle start to Wednesday with the unmistakable voice of Annie Lennox.

This was actually her cover of a song written by David Freeman and Joseph Hughes, better known as The Lover Speaks, no I hadn’t heard of them either. Their version didn’t really make an impact on the music world as it didn’t even make it into the UK charts, despite being released twice (1986 & 1988).

Lennox believed this was a song that should have made it’s mark and decided to take the risk and record her own version, believing it to be perfectly suited to her style. The risk paid off. It became her biggest selling solo single, spending twelve weeks in the charts and peaking at number two. It also earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the first time it had been awarded to a British artist.
