23 March, 1992.

I feel like I should be line dancing in the kitchen with the cats this morning, best not though eh?

Written by Don Von Tress in 1990 this song was originally offered to country and gospel quartet The Oak Ridge Boys but they turned it down on account of not liking the lyric achy breaky. In 1991 it was picked up and recorded by another country act The Marcy Brothers who changed the lyrics and included it on their second, self-titled album, but never made the charts.

A year later in 1992 Billy Ray Cyrus heard the original Von Tress version and decided to record it for his debut album Some Gave All. On it’s release the single became a top ten hit across the globe, reaching number one in Australia and New Zealand whilst also topping both the US and Canadian Country charts. In the UK it spent ten weeks on the charts and peaked at number two.

The song was a breakthrough hit for Billy Ray Cyrus and became the first triple platinum single in Australia, whilst in the US it was the first country song to achieve platinum status since Islands in the Stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
