1909.

Being as I am currently in a landlocked county, over fifty miles from the nearest beach, I have absolutely no idea this morning.

Written in 1907 by John A. Glover-Kind, it was first recorded in 1909 by Mark Sheridan, a music hall singer who made the song famous with his performances. At the time it was becoming increasingly popular for working class families to holiday at the seaside which no doubt helped the song’s popularity.

In more recent times it became the signature tune for Reginald Dixon who was the resident organist at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool from 1930 to 1970.
