1986.

Can anybody actually do that without looking completely ridiculous? Never mind, at least my head is in a chipper mood this morning, it woke me up whistling.

Written by US songwriter Liam Sternberg, this was the third single released from the Bangles’ second studio album Different Light. The idea for the lyrics came whilst he was on a ferry, watching people struggling to keep their balance and even falling over.

The original demo of the song was recorded in 1984 and offered to Toni Basil, who turned it down. It was then recorded by Lena Lovich but never released, until the demo landed on the desk of David Kahne who was producing the Bangles’ album.

On its release the song became a global top-ten hit for the group and whilst they didn’t have a problem with the song itself, they struggled with the overnight fame that it brought them. It not only reached number one on the weekly US Billboard chart, but also became the chart’s top selling record of the year. Here in the UK it spent nineteen weeks on the chart and peaked at number three.
