February, 1983.

‘Rip it up and start again’, how very appropriate considering we are approaching the end of the year, the end of the decade and indeed the end of this nation as we know it (but there’s no room for politics here, at least not today).

Written by frontman Edwyn Collins, (the very same Mr Collins who had a hit with A Girl Like You in 1995), this was the second single to be released from the album of the same name from Glasgow post-punk group Orange Juice. The song is basically a dig at the state of pop music in the early 1980s, particularly the line “you know the scene and it’s very humdrum. And my favourite songs entitled ‘boredom’.”

On its release the song spent eleven weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number eight, making this the group’s only top-forty hit. It also made it to the dizzying heights of number forty-two in New Zealand.
