March 1974.

Sunday morning, sunshine, and this – ‘blowing through the jasmine in my mind’. Perfect. Sometimes the inner jukebox just gets it so right.

Originally written and recorded by Jim Seals and Dash Crofts, otherwise known as Seals and Crofts, this was first released in 1972 from their Summer Breeze album. It reached number six on the US Billboard chart.

In 1974 the song was covered by The Isley Brothers and featured on their 1973 album 3 + 3. This version was a more soulful-rock affair, notable for the harmonies of the three vocalists and the guitar solo.

Whilst it didn’t do as well as the original in the US, only reaching number sixty, it did receive a warm welcome here in the UK where it spent eight weeks on the chart and peaked at number sixteen.

This version appears to be the most enduring of the two, it’s the only one I’ve ever heard being played on the radio. In fact, until this morning I didn’t even know it had been a cover.
