October 1985.

The song in my head is making me feel slightly intimidated this morning, or it could just be the fact that it’s Grace Jones…and we all know how scary she can be, especially if you’re Russell Harty!

Written by Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow, Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn, who also produced the song, this was the first single from Jones’ 1985 album of the same name. There are actually eight different variations of this one song on the album with the single version confusingly titled Ladies and Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones, which would eventually be released under the title Slave to the Rhythm.

It was originally written for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, as a follow up to their huge debut hit Relax, and it is said that Horn worked on the song tirelessly and had hoped it would become one of his biggest and most successful records. In the end the song was given to Jones but Horn still got his hit.

On its release this gave Jones an international top-ten hit, including reaching number one on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Here in the UK in spent nine weeks on the chart and peaked at number twelve, her highest performing single in the UK along with Pull Up to the Bumper released the following year.
