12 July, 1978.

Waking up with the refrain “Gordon is a moron” running through your head certainly makes for an interesting, and somewhat amusing, start to the day. No idea why it’s here this morning.

Written by Yorkshire born comedy musician and actor Graham Fellows, known for creating the character John Shuttleworth, this was first released as the B-Side to Going Steady on the Rabid record label. It’s basically the tale of an embittered teenage boy who has been dumped by his girlfriend for a guy called Gordon.

It received its first air play on Radio One courtesy of that great champion of the up and coming artist, John Peel. He is said to have commented that if the song were to be backed by a major record label, he could see it becoming a huge hit…and that’s just what happened.

EMI International picked up the song, flipped this to the A-Side and re-released it. It went on to spend twelve weeks on the UK charts and peaked at number four.
