Well it’s not Ben E. King, that’s for sure…although that may be where the song title came from.

This was written by Noel Gallagher, allegedly whilst he was suffering with a bout of self-inflicted food poisoning. The story is that after moving to London, his mother nagged him about eating properly so he decided to cook himself a proper Sunday roast…and made himself ill in the process (who hasn’t given themselves food poisoning at least once eh? Oh, just me then.)

As mentioned, the song title is thought to have been influenced by the John Lennon cover of Ben E. King’s classic song. Lennon was an idol of the Gallagher’s, so it makes sense.

Released as the second single from the band’s third album Be Here Now, this was a European hit. It reached the top ten in ten countries including here in the UK, where it spent twenty-two weeks on the chart but only managed to reach number two. It was kept off the top spot by Elton John’s Candle in the Wind 1997, re-released following the death of Princess Diana just three weeks before Oasis released this.
