1990.

I’ve got the power. That’s good to know, really it is, and I have big plans for it…much later. So if we could just store it someplace safe for now and enjoy a leisurely morning instead, I promise it won’t get wasted.

Written by Benito Benites and John “Virgo” Garrett III (better known as Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti), this was the lead single from the debut album World Power by German group Snap!

The group were allegedly the first to use a blend of sampled dance tracks mixed with a soulful female voice, a mix that became popular with the likes of The KLF and C + C Music Factory. It is also rumoured that the group’s first choice of female vocalist was Chaka Khan, but she wasn’t interested. Instead, she recommended her vocal director and back up singer Penny Ford – who jumped at the opportunity.

On its release this became a global success, both on the charts and with the critics, reaching number one in eight countries worldwide – including here in the UK where it spent twenty three weeks on the chart and two weeks at number one.
