12 July, 1984.

Well, it is Friday and don’t we all feel young at heart when the weekend beckons?

Written by Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward, better known collectively as Bananarama, along with Fahey’s then boyfriend Robert Hodgens of Scottish group The Bluebells, this was originally released as an album track by Bananarama on their 1983 debut album Deep Sea Skiving.

In 1984 the song was reworked and released as a single by The Bluebells and this time credited to Siobhan Fahey and Robert Hodgens. Session musician and violinist Bobby Valentino, who provided the violin solo on the track, would later win the right to be credited as a co-writer in 2002.

On its release the song spent twelve weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number eight.

In 1993, almost a decade after the group had split up, it was re-released after featuring in a television advert for Volkswagen and again spent twelve weeks on the charts, except this time it reached number one and stayed there for four weeks.

This unexpected re-release, and it’s success, prompted the group to reform for an appearance on Top of the Pops.
