1964.

Remember I said that the cats in this house all have their own theme song? No, I did, you probably just forgot. Well, this morning it’s the turn of Mr. Oliver. Seriously, he looks exactly like the cat in the advert, attitude and all.

Written by US country songwriter Don Wayne, this was first recorded by Val Doonican (I can’t believe I’ve woken up with Val Doonican in my head). This was the song that launched his career back in 1964 when the song spent twenty-one weeks on the UK chart and peaked number three. It also reached number two in his native Ireland as well as making it all the way to Australia and reaching number twenty-nine on the chart there.

A year later it finally reached the US music charts when country music producer, songwriter and singer Faron Young released his version, taking it to number ten on the country music charts.

Jump forward to 2021 and the song gained popularity once more after it was used in an advert for Vanquis credit cards. An advert featuring a rather handsome looking cat who bears a striking resemblance to our Mr. Oliver – who struts his stuff in much the same way.
