1983.

It would appear that the inner jukebox is trying to be funny this morning. It’s Boxing Day…gerrit? No, don’t laugh. You’ll only encourage it.

Who remembers this one then? It’s another one of those little gems from an early eighties band that you just don’t hear these days. Except in my head. The inner jukebox remembers everything (except the important bits sometimes, like who sang the song)…but I digress.

This was the debut single from British new wave group the JoBoxers and appeared on their 1983 album Like Gangbusters. The band was formed when former members of British punk band Subway Sect teamed up with US rapper Dig Wayne (aka Timothy Wayne Ball) who was living in England at the time. I don’t know about you, but this song isn’t what immediately springs to mind when I you Punk and Rap together. It worked though.

At the time of the song’s release the band were supporting Madness on their Rise and Fall tour. Whether that had any bearing on the song’s success is unknown, but it spent a total of sixteen weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number three.
