14 November, 1988.

Oh dear, I seem to have landed right slap bang in the middle of ‘Mehsville’ this morning with this one. I am not a Phil Collins fan, in case you were wondering (which you probably weren’t). His music is all just a little too meh and middle-of-the-road for me I’m afraid. Doesn’t seem to bother the inner jukebox though.

The song was written by Lamont Dozier (he of Motown fame) and Phil Collins especially for the 1988 film Buster, the soundtrack for which has been described as essentially a collection of oldies sandwiched between two Phil Collins songs.

It was awarded the 1989 Golden Globe Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television and gave Collins a number one on the US Hot 100 chart, staying there for two weeks, as well as number one on the US Adult Contemporary chart. It also reached number one in Canada and Japan, whilst here in the UK it spent eleven weeks on the charts and peaked at number six.
