Well really, what did you expect? We’re heading into another Bank Holiday weekend and, being as it’s the end of Bank Holiday season, we might as well see it out with a cliché, right?

This was written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens of the US group Pure Energy, no I’ve never heard of them either but that could well be because they never broke through into the UK charts. 

Whilst looking for material to flesh out Madonna’s first album, producer John “Jellybean” Benitez stumbled across this song. It had already been turned down by Phyllis Hyman and Mary Wilson of The Supremes but when asked if he could use it for the then unknown Madonna, Curtis and Stevens gave him the track as their own record label refused to release it.

The song was released as the third single from Madonna’s debut self-titled album and became a global top-ten hit as well as reaching number one on the US Dance Club chart. In the UK it spent eleven weeks on the chart and peaked at number six.
