May 1959.

I know it’s still only May, but, with all this glorious sunshine and warmth, it certainly feels like summer is on the way. Oh, I’m not completely daft. I am fully aware that the winter woollies could be back out again within a week (this is the UK after all)…so let’s just enjoy this while it lasts, yeah?

Written and recorded by Jerry Keller, this was his only release to make the charts on either side of the Atlantic. It reached number fourteen on the US Billboard chart whilst in the UK it spent fourteen weeks on the chart, including one week at number one.

The song entered the UK chart in August 1959 but didn’t reach number one until October of the same year and yet, despite this, it is still regarded as being the UK’s first ever summer hit.

Whilst Keller is seen as being a one hit wonder, he enjoyed further success as a songwriter for artists such as Andy Williams and Ricky Nelson, as well as writing the English lyrics for the song A Man and a Woman from the 1966 film Un homme et une femme.
