March 1980.

It’s Madness I tell you, Madness!…Or maybe just that Friday feeling.

Written by Mike Barson and Graham McPherson, or Suggs, to give him his proper title, this featured on the band’s 1979 debut album One Step Beyond. It was released as the lead song on the Work Rest Play EP in 1980 and has been described by Suggs himself as consisting of “miles of introduction, a couple of verses then miles of instrumental“.

On its release the song spent eight weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number six. It was then re-released in 1993, after the success of the re-issue of It Must Be Love, but that time only managed to reach number fifty-six having spent two weeks on the chart.
