8 June, 1998.

Just when I thought the inner jukebox couldn’t get any more random, this pops up.  I spent a moment or two trying to decide if this was amusing or just simply annoying, then realised I had to get up if only to get the damn song out of my head!

Written by comedian Keith Allen, with music by Alex James from Blur and Pink Floyd bassist Guy Pratt, this was released for the 1998 World Cup. What started out as a parody of football chants and songs, actually went on to become one in its own right. Over twenty years later you can still hear this being played by the England Band on the terraces at international games.

On its release the song courted controversy as some were concerned that it would be seen as a football hooligan anthem, despite this it went on to spend twenty-one weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number two.
