January 1979.

Now this is more like it, never mind the days of novelty pop and ‘meh’ records recently, this is it, proper music once more. I was almost beginning to think my head had forgotten about the good stuff.

Written by Nick Lowe and John “Gypie” Mayo, this was recorded for Dr Feelgood’s 1978 album Private Practice. It is allegedly based on Lowe’s experience after getting drunk on Kahlúa milk drinks whilst at a John Lee Hooker gig and also inspired by Hooker’s own lyrics from It Serves You Right to Suffer, specifically the line ‘the doctor put you on milk, cream and alcohol’.

This was the band’s fourth UK single and went on to become their biggest hit. It was the only one of their releases to reach the top ten, spending nine weeks on the charts and peaking at number nine.
