21 July, 1958.

A bit of good old fashioned rock and roll this morning, although slightly out of season now that autumn’s here.

Written by Eddie Cochran and his producer Jerry Capehart, this was originally intended to be the B-Side to Love Again, written by his girlfriend Sharon Sheeley. When it became clear that this was potentially the bigger hit though, the song was released as a single on its own.

It was a huge hit with teenagers at the time, who could relate to the lyrics about being held back by parents and society, and gave Cochran a global top twenty hit – even reaching number eight in the US. Here in the UK it spent six weeks on the chart and peaked at number eighteen.
