29 November, 1974.

Yes, apparently it does and my head has been ever so eager to let me know this morning. Over and over it kept telling me – probably because those are the only lyrics I can remember at this early hour.

This is the title track from Genesis’ 1974 concept album of the same name. The story of a Puerto Rican boy named Rael (the lamb) who goes on an adventure in New York, encountering challenges along the way with family, authority, love and self-sacrifice in order to learn more about himself.

Whilst all members of the band are credited with writing both the album and this track, the idea came predominantly from the mind of Peter Gabriel who presented the rest of the group with an entire synopsis for the album. Meanwhile the music and lyrics were allegedly heavily influence by the soul music of the 1960s, in particular the Drifter’s 1963 song On Broadway.

This was only ever released as a single in the US and whilst it didn’t make the charts, it did receive a fair amount of air play on the US FM radio stations at the time.
