February, 1983.

Oh, wouldn’t it just be marvellous if we could do that with 2020! Rip it up, dump it in the bin, forget about it and move on to a fresh new year. Unfortunately that’s just not possible. 2020 is going to be the year that just keeps on giving…long after we bid it farewell in a few days.

Written by frontman Edwyn Collins, (yes, the very same Mr Collins who had a hit with A Girl Like You in 1995), this was the second single to be released from the album of the same name by Glasgow post-punk group Orange Juice.

The song is basically a dig at the state of pop music in the early 1980s, particularly the line “you know the scene and it’s very humdrum. And my favourite songs entitled ‘boredom’.” – the latter part being a reference to the Buzzcocks, in particular their EP Spiral Scratch which proved to be an early influence on the group.

On its release the song spent eleven weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number eight, making this the group’s only top-forty hit. It also made it to the dizzying heights of number forty-two in New Zealand.
