1950.

You know when you wake up and you know it’s been snowing, even without looking out the window, you can just hear that everything’s different outside? Yeah, well, very much that this morning. Needless to say, the inner child is rather excited right now.

Originally written by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson, this was first recorded and released by singing cowboy Gene Autry and the Cass County Boys and followed hot on the heels of Autry’s recording of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the previous year. Although the original lyrics make no mention of Christmas this has become a seasonal favourite and even spawned a 1969 animated television special based on the song.

Over the years the song has been recorded by a number of artists including Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis and this version by the Ronettes, recorded for the the 1963 album A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector.

Now if you’ll excuse me, there is snowy fun to be had!
