February 1982.

No, no, no, this will not do. I need energy this morning. I need something with oomph. Not something that appears to be a very close relation of lift music. It just sounds like half-arsed disco to me, although, technically, I think this is classed as post-disco.

Written by Nidra Beard, Dana Meyers and Charmaine Sylvers this was Shalamar‘s second single released from their 1982 album Friends.

The song is most famous for the introduction of the Moonwalk dance, performed by band member Jeffrey Daniel during an appearance on Top of the Pops. Daniel went on to teach the dance to Michael Jackson who made it famous worldwide.

On it’s release the song made it to number forty-four in the US mainstream chart and number eight on the soul chart. In the UK it also peaked at number eight.

In 1996 it was covered by boy band 911 who took the song to number thirty-eight in the UK charts and in 2005 Liberty X released their version as the official Children in Need single, giving the song it’s highest chart position after it peaked at number six.
