February 1977.

It’s slightly annoying when you wake up with the instrumental bit of a song in your head. You know that you know what the song is, but you just can’t put your finger on it. It took my poor sleep addled brain a fair few minutes to figure it out, but we got there in the end.

The second single released from the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ eponymous debut album, this was never a huge hit, only reaching number forty in the UK and number nine in the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on it’s re-release in 1994. (Let me just say that I love the fact that there is a ‘bubbling under’ chart!). Despite the lack of chart success though, it went on to become one of Petty’s most popular songs.

This was the last song ever played live by the band, closing out their 2017 gig at the Hollywood Bowl. A week later Tom Petty died and the forty year career of the Heartbreakers was over.
