October 1979.

A first for the inner jukebox! That doesn’t happen so much these days, guess I’ve been doing this longer than I realised.

Written by Roger Hodgson, founding member of Supertramp, this was the fourth single released from the album Breakfast in America.

According to Hodgson the song works on two levels. At its most basic it’s about not wanting to go home, about avoiding it, putting it off because it may not be a happy place. Dig a little deeper though and it’s more about the journey you take through life to find that place that feels like home – and to find it within yourself.

On its release the song gave the band their second US top ten hit when it peaked at number ten, whilst also reaching number four in Canada. In 1980, a live version of the song was released and became a minor hit in Germany, where it reached number fifty-three, and the Netherlands, peaking at thirty-two.

It seems the song didn’t even make it into the charts in their native UK unfortunately.
