July 1978

So, it’s Saturday, and I wake up with something rather close to a football chant in my head. I think I rather like that. Well, if you’re going to wake up with something akin to a football chant in your head, then Saturday is the day to do it, right?

Written by band members Dave Parsons and Jimmy Pursey, this was quite possibly Sham 69’s finest song. Rather than being just rebellious punk, it became a youth anthem at the time and even included a football type chant to get the ‘kids’ going. Listen to the lyrics though and you’ll understand why it became an anthem…it wouldn’t be out of place today really.

On its release the song spent nine weeks on the UK chart and peaked at number nine, giving the band their first of three UK top ten hits. It was closely followed by Hurry Up Harry in October 1978, which reached number ten, and then Hersham Boys in July 1979 which became their biggest hit when it peaked at number six.
