Oh look, it’s The Smurfs, again. Mind you, it does feels sort of fitting for a Saturday. Reminds me of spending Saturday mornings watching cartoons as a youngster. Ah, those halcyon days.

Successful Dutch musician Pierre Kartner, better known as Father Abraham, was asked to write a song to promote The Smurfs in 1977. The record company only pressed one thousand copies of The Smurf Song, not believing it would be that popular. 

Oh how wrong they were. The single sold 400,000 copies worldwide and reached number one in sixteen countries. Here in the UK it was kept off the top spot by You’re the One that I Want but ended up holding the record for the most consecutive number of weeks at number two in the charts – six weeks in total.
