November 1973.

This is clearly the result of watching too much curling in recent days. Jolly nice of the inner jukebox to get in to the spirit of things though.

Written by lead singer Ian Hunter, this featured on Mott the Hoople’s 1974 album The Hoople. According to Hunter himself, he had removed all the white keys from his piano and forced himself to learn to play the with the black keys only. Consequently this song was composed using only sharp and flat keys.

It was recorded prior to Mick Ralphs’ departure from the band to form Bad Company and features backing vocals from female trio Thunderthighs, who also performed on Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side.

This gave the band their third UK top-ten hit, following on from All the Young Dudes and All the Way from Memphis, spending twelve weeks on the chart and peaking at number eight.
