September, 1967.

I don’t know about big spender, even a little spender would struggle to make it to the end of a month these days. At least pay day is in sight now. Better clear those cobwebs out of the bank account in readiness!

This was originally written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields for the 1966 stage musical Sweet Charity and later included in the 1969 film adaptation.

Whilst Peggy Lee was the first artist to record the song, 1966 album of the same name, it was Shirley Bassey who made it her own. Bassey recorded her version in 1967, which spent fifteen weeks on the UK charts but only managed to reach number twenty-one. Despite this it has become one of her signature songs over the years, fuelling her status as a gay icon in the UK.
