1990.

Oh my, we have a first-timer this morning. The inner jukebox must have been digging deep this morning…especially to find this one!

Written by Peter Cox and Richard Drummie, better known as Go West to you and me, this is a rather jolly, upbeat tune…with lyrics about a guy dealing with heartbreak. Are we sure this doesn’t qualify as Country?! The song first appeared in the 1990 film Pretty Woman and was included on the soundtrack, but later featured on the group’s 1992 album Indian Summer.

The music was written by Martin Page, who also co-wrote We Built This City with Starship and These Dream with Heart. At the time Go West, who had already had a number five hit in the UK with We Close Our Eyes, were yet to break into the US music scene – something that Page wanted to rectify.

Whilst the song wasn’t written for the film it appeared in, Go West’s record label EMI was associated with the soundtrack. When they heard the demo for this they asked for it to be included in the film. So it was.

As the popularity of the film grew, so did Go West’s exposure in the US. The single was released three months after the film and slowly began to rise up the US chart, eventually peaking at number eight and giving them their first top ten hit over there. Here in the UK the song didn’t do quite so well, spending ten weeks on the chart and peaking at number eighteen.
