25 July 1986.

Okay, this morning’s song choice is in no way related to the current missing cat situation, at least I hope it isn’t. The inner jukebox wouldn’t be that cruel, would it? (Cat is still missing though). It’s random, it’s just random.

Written by Cutting Crew frontman Nick Van Eede, this was the lead single from their 1986 debut album Broadcast. It was written after a night with his girlfriend and inspired by the French phrase la petite mort, ‘the little death’, used as a metaphor for an orgasm. Apparently Van Eede wrote the opening lyrics the next morning and within three days had completed the demo.

On it’s release this gave the group a global top-ten hit, including reaching number one in the US, Canada, Finland and Norway. In the UK it spent fourteen weeks on the chart and peaked at number four. To date this has been their most successful single and the only one to reach the top ten in the UK.
