19 November, 1986.

It may be Madonna but this time I can’t blame the Madonna fan for monopolising the Android in the corner, for two reasons. Firstly, this is classed as early Madonna in our house and she doesn’t like early Madonna. Secondly, this happens to be a track on the only Madonna album in the house that I actually own (bought when it first came out), an album that the Madonna fan in the house doesn’t particularly like, for reasons mentioned above. So, this is most definitely my own head this morning.

Written by songwriters Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson, this was originally entitled Follow Your Heart and was a rock and roll track intended for Cyndi Lauper. She never got the chance to record it though, or even hear the demo. Madonna decided she wanted to record it for her 1986 album True Blue, re-writing it with producer Patrick Leonard and turning it into more of a dance-pop track.

It became the fourth single released from the album and went on to become a global top ten hit, reaching number one in the US. In Australia it only reached number sixteen, breaking a run of nine consecutive top ten hits there. Here in the UK it was well received by critics and spent nine weeks on the chart, peaking at number four.
